Puppies are like babies; they're lively, they're curious and they teethe! This can lead them into serious trouble unless you take preventative measures.
Puppy Proof your house and yard.
|
Remember
that a puppy has a lower vantage point than yours-like a baby who has begun to crawl-and may be attracted to things you cannot see when you are standing.
A little effort now and with consistent training of your new puppy this will save you and your puppy headaches and heartaches later.
Here are some suggestions:
|
1. Confine your puppy to a safe area inside and keep doors and windows closed and/or screened securely.
Your puppy should not be left unsupervised inside or outside, EVER!
Puppies will investigate, wander about and possibly get into mischief or trouble.
2. Keep your puppy off balconies, uppper decks or
porches.
3. Securely store cleaning supplies, detergent,
bleach, paint and paint thinner, fertilizer, disinfectants, mothballs, insect and rodent poisons, antifreeze and oil. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP
THESE ITEMS WHERE YOUR PUPPY CANNOT GAIN ACCESS.
4. Remove poisonous houseplants or place them in hanging baskets up high out of puppy's reach
and climbing reach.
Some common houseplants that are poisonous :
AMARYLLIS**************MISTLETOE
AZALEA*****************MORNING GLORY
BLEEDING HEART*********NARCISSUS
CALADIUM***************OLEANDER
CLEMATIS***************PHILODENDRON
DAFFODIL***************POINSETTIA
DAPHNE*****************POTATO
DIEFFENBACHIA**********RHODODENDRON
ENGLISH IVY************RUBBER PLANT
FOXGLOVE***************TOBACCO
HOLLY******************TULIP
IRIS*******************YEW
IVY (MOST TYPES)**********
5. KEEP TOILET LIDS DOWN.
PUPPIES MAY PLAY IN OR DRINK THE WATER.
THEY COULD HURT THEMSELVES BY FALLING IN OR
THE LID CLOSING ON THEM.
TOILET BOWL CLEANSERS ARE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED.
6. UNPLUG, REMOVE OR COVER ANY ELECTRICAL CORDS
IN YOUR PUPPY'S CONFINEMENT AREA.
IF YOUR PUPPY CHEWS LIVE WIRES, THIS CAN LEAD TO SEVERE MOUTH BURNS, ELECTROCUTION, DEATH, AND FIRES.
IT is a GOOD idea to cover electrical outlets with plug covers when not in use.
7. KEEP ALL MEDICATIONS (HUMAN AND ANIMAL) OUT OF REACH OF YOUR PUPPY.
8. ****CHECK TO SEE WHERE YOUR PUPPY IS BEFORE CLOSING ANY DOORS! MAKE IT A HABIT TO CONDUCT
A "PUPPY CHECK" BEFORE LEAVING HOME TO MAKE SURE YOUR PUPPY HAS NOT ACCIDENTALLY BEEN LOCKED IN
AN UNSAFE AREA.******

What is CUTE in a puppy can be extremly annoying in an adult and proper training eliminates the need for corrective measures which could have been prevented.
HOUSE TRAINING
If your puppy does not come house trained or to continue house training here is what has worked for us for over twenty years :
Our puppies go to their new homes with housebreaking usually completed as we start housetraining when we start to wean the puppies from their mom, it is far easier to teach a puppy correctly than to clean up mistakes.

***********TRAINING TIPS*************
LIST OF DO'S:
1. Use the same door, EVERYTIME, to take puppy
outside. This will help the puppy to understand
where the puppy should go to be let out.
If your puppy does not bark to be let out, many of our's just go to the door and sit!, try hanging a bell on doorknob and show puppy how to ring it when you take the puppy out.
2. PRAISE THE PUPPY WHEN THEY GO OUTSIDE,this will let puppy know you are happy and that the puppy has done the right thing.
3. If you want the puppy to go in the same spot,
take the puppy to this spot everytime you take them out. Puppies learn by repetition, we suggest and supply with our puppies a retractable lead for this purpose.
4. Puppies need to go to the bathroom far more often then adults, after every nap, after every feeding, and generally every hour.
5. Take away food atleast four hours before bedtime, and make sure puppy has been taken out
three or four times after taking away food, they do not sleep well on a full belly. We give the puppy a chance to get a drink before taking them out, otherwise the same for water, puppies can not sleep with a full bladder and their bladder is small.
6. Take puppy out as soon as you wake, they do not want to wait for coffee, the kids, etc.
7. If you plan to change the food they have been on, do it gradually, mix the new food with a bag of the food they have been on. We use Natural
Balance, Kirkland, Flint River Ranch, Nutra Max
large breed puppy, Wellness and Canadae puppy.
We suggest this food to be fed to our puppies
for proper health and growth. If the puppy has a loose stool, while waiting to see your veterinarian we suggest a little hamburger and rice or yogurt which will help firm up the stool if nothing else is wrong with your puppy.
List of DO NOT'S :
1. DO NOT rub your puppies nose in it's stool or urine, this is WRONG and will only add to your problem, or worse make the puppy fear you.
2. DO NOT give the responsibility of house training to your child, while they can help
a properly trained puppy needs the guidence
of an adult.
3. DO NOT leave your puppy unattended, know whether the puppy has gone to the bathroom and where the puppy is, it only takes a minute for
a puppy to get into trouble.
